The couple, whose relationship is under strain from the Manchester United striker’s alleged infidelity with a prostitute, released the statement as papers seen by Bloomberg suggest the Mirror is being sued, presumably for libel.</p> <p>“The last six days have been extremely painful for us and our families,” reads the joint statement.</p> <p>“It is impossible for us, as it would be for any family, to attempt to resolve any issues in the current media glare and against the backdrop of so many inaccurate and intrusive stories.</p> <p>“We would therefore ask that the media now respects our privacy and the right of our family to discuss these matters in private.”</p> <p>Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports suggest that Wayne Rooney has filed a suit in the High Court, to be heard on Monday, with Mirror Group Newspapers as defendant. While Gordon Brown’s doomed party made the strongest manifesto play for fan-based ownership the Tories followed suit.</p> <p>Now in power David Cameron’s government has <a href="http://www.hmg.gov.uk/epetition-responses/petition-view.aspx?epref=football4fans" target="_blank">responded</a> to a supporter-led <a href="http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/football4fans/" target="_blank">petition</a>, calling on the government to end the cycle of greed and financial mismanagement in football that has overwhelmed Manchester United, Liverpool, Cardiff, Crystal Palace, Southend, Portsmouth and Notts County in the past year … with yet more inaction.</p> <p>“We understand why fans are becoming increasingly concerned at the level of debt accumulated at some clubs from takeovers and recognise that there are some tough challenges facing the game,” said the government response.</p> <p>“However, it is not for the Government to regulate football.
